The Canton of Vaud serves the food of tomorrow through personalised nutrition, functional food and robotised agriculture.

The canton of Vaud has a strong agricultural tradition and this developed the agri-food sector with the creation of Nestlé in Vevey in 1905. The region also benefits from a strong industrial tradition, complemented by a strong spirit of innovation. It enables companies to design and produce new solutions to meet today’s needs and anticipate the future’s challenges.

The Food Innovation Scene in the State of Vaud

Products from the Vaud food industry are exported worldwide. But apart from the large-scale trade in foodstuff, the canton of Vaud has important players in the research and development of new products. Academic institutes, including the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), are working on a future-oriented challenge: agritech. Startups are investing in this emerging sector by developing drones to control crops, weeding robots, “intelligent” greenhouses and remote sensing systems. The EPFL also opened its Integrative Food and Nutrition Center to focus on issues related to nutrition and food production. Meanwhile, the EHL Hospitality Management School is also active in research, innovation and entrepreneurship with its Innovation Village and the Metro Hospitality Lab.

Eight foodtech startups will pitch in front of Japanese corporations and investors interested in food innovation in an upcoming webinar by VentureLab & JETRO.

On March 24, the Swiss Foodtech Startup Innovation Webinar will be held by Venturelab and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). Eight innovative foodtech startups have been selected to pitch their solutions ranging from agricultural systems for sustainability, meat alternatives or digital platforms to develop collaborative R&D projects or business collaboration with Japanese corporations. Furthermore, Michael Kleindl from Blue Horizon Ventures will give a keynote on the future of food, the strengths of the Swiss food ecosystem and its prospects.

As one of its activities, JETRO has launched a team that accelerates open innovation between Japanese companies and overseas startups. To address social problems within Japan, JETRO will bridge Japanese companies and overseas startups who have cutting-edge technologies and disruptive business strategies by offering them opportunities to attend Japanese exhibitions or dispatching Japanese delegations to the countries where there are advanced innovation ecosystems.

Zurich-based startup Planted produces plant-based meat in a bid to raise awareness for the protection of the planet.

Startup Planted grows, harvests and produces plant-based meat using pea proteins and fibres, canola oil and water. And their products are not only healthy, delicious and affordable, but they also taste and feel like animal meat. 

The idea to produce meat from plants started with Pascal Bieri, Christoph Jenny, Lukas Böni and Eric Stirnemann in 2019. Their mission is to bring a delicious and nutritious experience without harming animals or the environment. And since then, the Planted team has been revolutionising the way meat is perceived and consumed globally. Additionally, they aim to end animal cruelty, reduce pollution and make the world better and tastier.

Today, Planted provides Europe’s growing number of conscious connoisseurs with up to 500 kilograms of plant-based meat per day.
